“The Netherlands: a Potato Country”

The Dutch potato sector is world leader. The country cultivates 160.000 hectares on a yearly basis, of which 36.000 hectares seed potatoes. About 80% of the seed potatoes are exported to about 70 countries all over the world. The Netherlands excels in the development (genetics) of varieties and the multiplication of seed.

The Netherlands has developed a professional supply industry that develops potato varieties and state-of-the-art equipment of high quality:

Summarized: machinery, equipment and knowledge for quality and performance improvement at each stage of the potato chain.

Besides the supply of raw material and machinery, there also has been developed a high-level knowledge structure in the Netherlands. As a result, the Dutch potato sector has gained international awareness and positions in international markets. The Netherlands excels in the field of potato production in terms of starting material, technology yields and knowledge.

“Argentina: a Potato Potential ”

Argentina has a long history as a potato producing country, reaching 250,000 hectares in the 1950’s. Today the country cultivates less than 100,000 hectares, with an average yield of 30 tons per hectare.

Except a limited group of producers (mainly industry suppliers) reaching European results. The average yield is between 25 to 30 tons per hectare.

In several regions of the country, the circumstances for the cultivation are good and many professional growers are active in the sector. It is for this reason that several major international potato processing companies like Farm Frites, McCain and Frito-Lay, have chosen the country as a basis for establishing facilities for producing their deep frozen French fries and other processed potato products with the aim of supplying Argentina as well as other markets in South America.

The market for potatoes and potato, products mainly in the Mercosur is developing rapidly. Based on this, Argentina can occupy an important position in the production and supply of potatoes and potato products in the Mercosur market.

During the last decade especially, many developments can be noticed in the Argentine potato sector, especially initiated on the demand side, resulting in high growth rates for the processing industry and a strong growth of the export of frozen potato products to Brazil especially. However, while Brazil’s market for frozen potato products continues to grow at high rates, the export from Argentina has remained around 100.000 tons since 2009/2010. The gap is being filled by exporters from Europe.

The potential for further growth for the Argentine potato sector is enormous, but in order to convert the potential chances into real growth, the sector will have to adapt to the changing demands by means of chain cooperation and innovation.

These demands include preferences for varieties with special qualities that make them suitable for processing. Other demands concern, amongst others, year-round supply, competitive cost-price, food safety and sustainable production.

This rapidly changing requires a further professionalization of the potato chain and demand for high quality starting materials, modern technology and expertise.

On the production side, it can be noticed that field-labor is getting scarcer and its cost is increasing rapidly. Mechanisation is the answer to keep the cost-price within limits and to stay competitive. The Argentine potato sector is ready to use new varieties, technologies and techniques to boost yields and quality and to lower losses.
